The Art of Chanel and Christine Penley

Chanel and Christine were born and raised in San Diego California and both drew at an early age. During their high school years, they attended art classes; Christine leaning towards Fashion Design, Chanel more towards traditional studies and Graphic Arts. After high school, Christine went to college to pursue a degree in Fashion Design, but the extreme hours at work caused her to drop the classes. Chanel continued pursuing art classes such as Life drawing in college while changing majors from Interior Design to Multimedia. In 2006, Chanel went back to school to pursue her Bachelors in 3D Modeling and Animation.

From Comics to Art: Chanel and Christine decided to make comics back in 2003 and in 2005, created Evil Revolution Studios (www.evilrevolutionstudios.com) which still runs today. Chanel works on “Evil Kittens Revolt” and Christine works on “Mr. Bones and Death”. Most of their inspirations for the comics come from real life situations dealing with work, bad mornings, friends and family driving them nuts, traffic, run-ins with the law, and whatever else ruins their day. Christine and Chanel try to make laughter out of misery, which is how their comics came to be. Both joined the video game industry in 2000 and have experienced the ups and downs of the industry. Christine still works within the industry, but Chanel has moved on to the Web related field while working on her Bachelors. With the personalities of co-workers, tremendous amounts of hours worked, seeing friends get laid off and never moving up are the events that have changed the sisters’ views on work and play. The comics were created separately and have the personality of their creators.

In 2006, they had the idea to go a different direction than working on comics. They started to paint again though neither of them had painted for years. As seen by their comics, the art represents its creator. Chanel’s art ranging from light hearted as seen with some of the cat paintings, to dark and sexy. Chanel’s influences come from artists such as Patrick Nagel, Tim Cantor, Walt Disney and Warhol. The Fashion Classes were not a loss for Christine as she applied what she learned to her art. She took the Fashion sketching style of tall, very slender bodies and mixed it with her own exaggerated features and dark persona. Her style is also heavily influenced by Tim Burton and Walt Disney who she has admired since she was a child. Christine’s paintings are darker but some still containing a sense of humor.

JACKI GEARY first discovered her artistic proclivity at a very young age. Growing up in Connecticut, she loved drawing portraits of family and friends. She studied art, with a concentration in photography, at Western Connecticut State University, where she earned a bachelor’s of fine art degree and graduated with honors, in addition to winning the Excellence in Photography Award. Although Jacki took art classes in college, she considers herself a self-taught painter. Her focus is on color, composition and texture. She finds the psychology of abstract expressionism very interesting, as it is a window into an artist’s mind. Jacki has exhibited her paintings in galleries, professional establishments and non-traditional venues.

Recently Jacki was awarded the prestigious “Emerging Artist – Honorable Mention” at the Gaslamp Art Showcase in San Diego. She has sold to private collectors from all over the country and is an active member of Temecula Artist Collective. Currently residing in southern California, Jacki continues to pursue her passion for the arts as a highly sought after painter and professional photographer.

TODD SANDERS started painting in 1997, after realizing that he had a love for expressing himself through fine art. He has always had quite an imagination since childhood. In his late 20’s, with his keen sense of creativity, he attended the Art Institute of Seattle earning an Associates Degree in the field of Culinary Arts. He stretches his creativity from the kitchen cutting boards and on to the canvases that sit on his easels. Painting with bright colors and bold lines, you can meet Todd through his paintings, as they carry the innocence of childhood. You will see the colorful playful side of Todd and yet also discover his authentic boldness. With inspiration from artist such Matisse, Keith Haring, and David Hockney, Todd continues to create and expand the ideas of “pop” art. Each painting provides a small glimpse into his life. His paintings will be of a fading memory or something he has seen or experienced. The choice for using acrylics allows him to get all his thoughts and visions out onto the canvas as fast as they form and manifest in his head. His paintings are usually of a person, place or event that has become a stepping stone in this journey called life.

TIB NELSON DESIGNS

For Maresa (Reese) Cogger, fashion is exciting, indulgent, inspiring, theatrical, exotic and daring! She loves the frivolity of it all, especially how the art form fills her with the childish exuberance associated with “dress up time”. Fashion can be wildly unpractical and she loves to bring these impractical ideas into her everyday life! Tib Nelson Designs derives from the maiden names of her two beautiful grandmothers, Gladys Nelson and Margie Tibodeau. This solo label has much of the same feel and inspiration as red llama designs. This line takes cues from photographs of her perfectly coiffed Grandmother walking down the streets of Seattle in the 1940′s, while incorporating her own love of costuming and street style. TND was partially created for her very own imaginary superhero, The Victorian Space Secretary! She is always on the go, but is not afraid to incorporate a wee bit of excitement into her daily life! All garments are handmade and one of a kind. You will not find yourself at a cocktail party sporting the same frock as the bird across the room sipping her fruity cosmo.

MISS DELISH DESIGNS

Miss Delish Designs incorporates femininity with daring audacity – bold, delicate jewelry that challenges the status quo. Asymmetry plays out unexpectedly and delightfully; an informal balance and harmony in each piece.

A Colorado native, Marisa Hurwitz, designer and creator behind Miss Delish Designs, draws inspiration from the awing beauty of nature, and almost anything vintage. Many of her pieces include shells – nature’s perfection – and vintage objects and findings.

Marisa’s creativity and artistic passion have shined her whole life. Growing up, she spent her summers enrolled in art classes beginning at the age of six. It was not until recently, though, that Marisa ever tested her skills in jewelry making, and now one year later, Miss Delish has set up shop on her dining room floor.

All Miss Delish pieces are handbuilt with love.

DEANNE WILLIAMSON

“I believe art should not only look beautiful, but should also have soulful messages that stir emotions.”

DeAnne Williamson is an artist and designer living in San Clemente, California. Her interest in art began at a young age while growing up in the Mojave Desert town of Barstow, California. Having a father who was a landscape oil painter, she was always encouraged to use her creativity to pursue various art projects. DeAnne attended San Diego State University in the graphic design program. After receiving her BFA, the desire to put her creative talents to work led her to a successful career in graphic design. She was honored to work for some of the top design firms in Chicago as well as San Diego and then took a 3-year break to study art history in Europe. In 2002, she made the decision to become a freelance designer. With more flexibility in her work schedule, she also decided to pursue her longtime love of fine art. DeAnne works with mixed media on canvas: collage, acrylic and found objects. She utilizes collage to represent the underlying expression in her work. She believes that art should not only look beautiful, but should also have soulful messages that stir emotions. Her art has rapidly gained local interest and has been displayed at the Bradford Gallery in Newport Beach, Gallery 104 in San Clemente, WestEdge Gallery in San Clemente and the Strychnin Gallery in Berlin, Germany. DeAnne lives in sunny southern California with her husband Greg and son Oliver.

LYDIA MARTIN grew up in an artistic family and was encouraged to pursue art when she showed interest and creativity at an early age. After high school she attended The Advertising Arts College of San Diego to pursue a career in Graphic Arts. After several years as a freelance designer she decided to pick up fine art again and hasn’t turned back since. She has sold her paintings world-wide over the last three years by means of the internet and a growing number of friends and local supporters. Her work is said to be both visually captivating and strongly emotional.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

The ultimate goal with my art is to visually express emotions that cannot be confined by common words and to tell the story of the human soul. But if no one ever sees my art then that’s OK too. I just need to keep creating-it’s therapy to get me through my own emotional experiences and insomnia-induced thoughts.

I am inspired by many things but find relation to nature and the female form most inspiring. These things can be both raw and beautiful which make for striking art. But also, the metaphorical qualities they contain takes the art to a different level for me. Elements of nature, in my paintings, represents the ephemeral qualities of life, the struggle to survive and the reminder that we are mortal, fleshy beings. I find that the soul, emotions, and spiritual side of our being is best represented with the female figure. I think most will agree that women carry a lot of inner strength while still remaining vulnerable to the emotional side, which is why words like goddess and muse are used throughout the history of art.

My latest series is based on very simple concepts that everyone encounters when they are faced with making a decision that may change the direction of their life. Standing at the threshold of commitment, the thoughts and emotions of past experiences and lessons learned seem to cause us to hesitate, to wait, to fear and possibly turn away. It’s our survival instincts kicking in. And yet the human spirit is constantly tested and we find ourselves standing in that doorway, time and time again, contemplating what’s beyond. This series of artworks touches on a few of the emotions that are felt when flirting with devotion.

——————————————————————————————————————

CHRIS ELLIMAN is a multi-faceted artist who thrives on challenging subject matter and technical illustration. Elliman is a native Californian, born and raised in San Francisco. At the age of 16 Elliman became an entrepreneur, receiving his first commission for art as well as winning various awards. While providing himself with an income through fine art and airbrushing murals, Elliman continued to hone his artistic skills. In 1991, Elliman relocated to San Diego where he became head designer for Daniel Jenkins Designs. He eventually started his own clothing label, SNAPT USA. Longing to get back to fine art, Elliman sold SNAPT to Japanese Distributers. In order to capture the human form authentically, Elliman studied anatomy for 5 years.

After painting for 20 years, Elliman’s trademark style emerged. The subject of TIME is Elliman’s solution to life’s constant questions therefore making TIME significant throughout his series appropriately named THE TIMING. This series took hold in the fine art and limited edition arena and was signed by Gamut Control Publishing LLC out of Dallas, Texas. His thought provoking artwork is now collected around the world.

When out of the studio, Elliman can be found airbrush body painting throughout Southern California. Currently he can be found at UNIVERSAL in Hillcrest, Hardrock Hotel, On Broadway and Red Circle among many other venues in San Diego. His body painting business is called XOMPANY, pronounced “company”. This name describes how Elliman blends art and people together by considering the business being good company for anyone and any special event. Most recently, he has been asked to revamp his SNAPT USA clothing label as a lead designer.

SEAN BRANNAN

Sean’s recent abstract work could be described as Modernist Cloissonnism- a style of painting with bold single color forms separated by dark heavy contours. The name evokes the technique of cloisonné, where wires (cloisons or “compartments”) are soldered to the body of the piece, filled with powdered glass, and then fired. The approach Sean takes to painting is to access the subconscious through the creative process. Often beginning with a continuous bold single line drawing, he creates non-representational forms that seem to create unions or relationships with one another. Once established, he uses colors that, for him, convey strong emotional and symbolic energy. The goal of the interplay of these shapes and colors is to create a playful meandering movement for the viewer. He tends to view these unions between line, form, and color as “communities”, or a microcosm that informs the interconnectivity of human relationships.
Sean Brannan received a BA in graphic design from Plymouth State University in 1994.

He currently resides in San Diego, CA.

DERON COHEN was born and raised in San Diego, California where he has shown his paintings extensively. Deron received a Bachelor in Fine Art from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1994 and has been creating art ever since. Most recently, he has been in group shows at Gallery 3060, Limbo Fine Arts, and Sushi Gallery, as well as one man shows at the Playa Gallery and the Nico Gallery in Seattle, Washington.

Through SanDiegoArtKids.com, Deron has been creating curricula for school art programs and teaching. Deron has also been teaching painting courses to adults at the San Diego Art Department in Northpark.

When he is not painting in the studio or teaching, he is collaborating with Paint Night Group and talking about himself in the third person.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

“The act of creation is a very spiritual thing to me. When I am creating, I tap into a Source outside of myself. I never know the subject matter of a painting when I lay down my first brushstrokes. I start each painting by creating an unplanned composition of lines. Those lines begin to form images and those images begin to tell a story. I let the Source conduct my creativity and I perform the painting. A whole world that doesn’t exist anywhere but in my imagination spills out onto the canvas.

In my paintings I often depict stories and myths in which I try to communicate philosophical ideas or questions related to the human experience. Regardless of the small differences that exist between humans of different ethnicities, religions and geographical locations, we have the same basic needs and face many of the same problems. Love, War, Peace, Spirituality, Birth and Death are all themes that find their way into my artwork.

As I continue to learn more about life and painting, I feel I’m on the right path. If there is one thing that I can say with certainty it is that I am happiest when I am creating. When I am thinking creatively and producing something that wasn’t there before, I know that I am fulfilling my purpose in life. I believe that being creative is a gift, but it is a gift that everyone possesses. I have developed my gift over many years and am very happy to share it with you. I hope that it has a positive impact on you in some way.”
